Linguathinking: Philosophy
At LinguaThinking, language learning is understood as both an intellectual practice and a human endeavour.
Language, Culture and Intellectual Formation
Academic progression emerges through the cultivation of advanced cognitive skills and reflection, including the ability to think deeply about language across cultures and engage with cultural nuance. Teaching French and Italian at LinguaThinking is therefore about much more than examinations, or vocabulary and grammar — it is a way of understanding the world through different perspectives. Through the study of language, culture and literature, LinguaThinking invites young people to explore diverse viewpoints, reflect on essential questions of human experience and engage thoughtfully with linguistic and cultural difference.
Language learning as ethical engagement
The study of languages, cultures and their literature naturally fosters intellectual curiosity, as well as forms of human connection, empathy and responsibility. Engaging in outreach is therefore not separate from language learning but integral to LinguaThinking’s work. Alongside independent courses and academic support, LinguaThinking is guided by a broader ethos of promoting access to language learning and supporting inclusion in education. While LinguaThinking primarily works with independent and international learners, it also dedicates time to pro bono tuition and mentoring for under-resourced students, in order to support pathways for those wishing to study language and literature at university level.
Language study in the contemporary world
LinguaThinking also promotes the value of modern language study through collaboration with students, schools and outreach initiatives. Students are encouraged to consider the importance of language skills in the modern world and to reflect on their role as global citizens.
